Peeking through the trees reveals a place where nature and learning intertwine. This is the Akabane Natural Observation Park’s nature observation building. It is a unique facility in Kita-ku Tokyo.
Akabane Natural Observation Park opened on April 1 1999. It transformed part of the former Ground Self-Defense Force Jujo Garrison Akabane Branch site into a park. This transformation brought nature closer to the community. It also provided a space for observation and interaction.
Before becoming a park the area had another plan. There was a plan to construct a vehicle base for the subway. This was in 1973. Local residents strongly opposed the vehicle base plan. The Teito Rapid Transit Authority abandoned the plan. Instead the area was developed as a natural park.
The Akabane Natural Observation Park aims to recreate the area’s original natural environment. It features wetlands. These wetlands support diverse flora and fauna. The park allows visitors to observe and appreciate nature.
Inside the park you will find various facilities. There is Donguri Forest and rice paddies. Ponds add to the scenic beauty. One of them is selected as one of the 100 famous ponds in Tokyo. There is also a day camp area for barbecues. Reservations are required for the day camp and multi-purpose plaza.
The park also features the Kita-ku Furusato Farmhouse Experience Hall. This relocated and restored a traditional house. The house dates back to the Edo period. It is a designated cultural property of Kita-ku. It opened to the public in 2005.
The park spans 54020 square meters. It offers a green oasis in the urban landscape. The Akabane Natural Observation Park’s nature observation building allows you to learn about the park.
The park has different opening times depending on the season. From April to September it is open from 8 am to 6 pm. From October to March it closes earlier at 4:30 pm. Admission is free allowing everyone access to nature.
