“Two pounds of wax?” a miller’s voice echoed from the past. “That’s what this Weiße Mühle owed, just for the ground it stood on.” Here at the Weiße Mühle, the air still whispers tales of its long history. The Weiße Mühle first appears in records in 1144, paying a yearly tribute of two pounds of wax. Imagine the scene: carts laden with beeswax rumbling towards the Gotteshaus, the payment for this vital mill. The Weiße Mühle wasn’t just any mill. It ground the flour for something sacred: the hosts used in Würzburg’s churches and monasteries. This “white flour,” or “Weißmehl” is where the Weiße Mühle gets its name. This made the mill very important to powerful institutions. In 1507, the Carthusian monastery of Engelgarten gained control of the whole village, including the Weiße Mühle. Years later, in 1562, the Bürgerspital Würzburg rebuilt the mill. Look for the arched doorway leading to the cellar. This arch is a reminder of their work. The Weiße Mühle changed hands again in 1604 in a property swap. The Carthusian monastery traded another mill for full ownership of this one, along with its fields, meadows, and vineyards. For centuries, the rhythmic grinding of the Weiße Mühle continued. But in 1803, the secularization brought big changes. The monastery closed, its possessions auctioned off. The Weiße Mühle, along with its land, went under the hammer. The Weiße Mühle eventually found a new owner: the community of Estenfeld. They purchased it in 1966 and began a significant restoration. In 1987, the Weiße Mühle reopened, housing not only the mill itself, but also a restaurant and a multi-purpose hall. Sadly, tragedy struck in 2024. A devastating fire ripped through the historic building’s residential section, leaving five people homeless. The damage was extensive, and the future of this historic landmark remains uncertain. But as you stand here, remember the centuries of history etched into its stones. From wax tributes to sacred flour, and fires to restorations, the Weiße Mühle has witnessed the flow of time, much like the Kürnach River flowing beside it.
