High above Manly’s shores stands St Patrick’s Seminary a majestic testament to faith and ambition. This wasn’t just any seminary. It was conceived by Archbishops Roger Vaughan and Cardinal Patrick Moran. Their vision a national seminary for Australia took shape between 1885 and 1889. The architects Sheerin and Hennessy designed a breathtaking Perpendicular Gothic structure. It cost a staggering 70000 pounds to build. The imposing building overlooks the Tasman Sea. Its commanding presence is undeniable. St Patrick’s Seminary opened its doors on January 23 1889.
For decades St Patrick’s Seminary trained countless men for the priesthood. Among its alumni were prominent figures. These included Cardinals Gilroy Freeman Cassidy and Clancy and over 41 bishops. The seminary served as a crucible forging religious leaders who shaped Australia’s Catholic landscape. One notable early student was Patrick Joseph Hartigan. He penned the beloved “John O’Brien” poems. These poems captured the essence of Australian Catholic rural life.
Famous author Thomas Keneally studied there. He later drew inspiration from the seminary in his novels. Even Tony Abbott a future Prime Minister spent time within these hallowed halls. By its centenary in 1989 St Patrick’s Seminary had ordained 1714 men. The seminary’s legacy extends far beyond the walls. The seminary however wasn’t immune to the changing times. By 1995 shifting ecclesiological thinking led to its relocation to Strathfield. The magnificent building found a new purpose. It now houses the International College of Management Sydney. Its grandeur has not faded. St Patrick’s Seminary now educates future business leaders. The beautiful Cardinal Cerretti Chapel remains a cherished landmark. It continues to host weddings. It stands as a beautiful reminder of faith and history.
