Tucked away behind the Ermington Shopping Centre, a treasure trove of stories awaits. Ermington Library stands as a testament to the community’s thirst for knowledge. It first opened its doors on October 19, 1963. The opening was slightly delayed. The Parramatta City Band was unavailable for the initially planned date. The residents of Ermington had long desired a local library. They were tired of traveling to Parramatta for books. Newspapers reported stacks of books gathering dust in the Parramatta City Library. This fueled the residents’ desire for their own library. The sale of the Parramatta School of Arts finally provided the necessary funds. Ermington Library was built for around £9,369. The library quickly became a community hub. This was solidified with the opening of the Ermington Community Hall next door in 1966. The installation of air conditioning in 1970 further enhanced its appeal. Ermington Library underwent significant renovations. In 1990, an extension was added. A major refurbishment followed in 1999, costing over $280,000. This upgrade brought natural light through a glass brick wall. It also provided space for community activities, updated technology, and improved accessibility. The grand reopening featured bagpipes, dancing schoolchildren, and even the local fire brigade. Ermington Library continued to evolve. The library services were computerized in 1991-1992. New collections of videos, CD-ROMs, and multicultural resources were added. Internet access became available in 1993. Ermington Library has always been more than just a place to borrow books. It has actively engaged the community with initiatives like the Homework Support Program. It has promoted early literacy with programs featuring Redsee the Readasaurus. It even hosted a mobile petting zoo with animals from Taronga Park. More recently, Ermington Library has offered technology training and hosted events.
