In 1923, a small Baptist mission took root on M Street in Washington D.C. This humble beginning marked the birth of Saint Paul Baptist Church. Originally called the New St. Paul Baptist Church, it emerged from a division within the Delaware Ave. Baptist Church. The early years were challenging. The church faced a significant hurdle during the Great Depression, dwindling to a mere six members. Yet, their faith persevered. Saint Paul Baptist Church found a new home in 1957 at 2400 Franklin St. N.E. It was renamed Second New St. Paul Baptist Church due to another New St. Paul church already existing in the city. The church purchased this property for $65,000, a testament to their resilience and commitment. The leadership transitioned from Rev. A.P. Cook, who served diligently for 34 years, to Rev. Edgar L. Williams, Sr. in 1958. Rev. Williams inherited a congregation of just 27 members and substantial financial burdens. His leadership ignited a revival. By Easter 1958, the church welcomed 99 new members, with 75 joining through baptism. Growth continued, prompting the first major construction phase in 1961. This expansion included raising the original structure while preserving the entrance, a symbolic gesture of honoring the past while embracing the future. The cornerstone was laid on March 12, 1961, marking a significant milestone in Saint Paul Baptist Church’s history. By October 1961, membership swelled to 545. Further improvements followed, including a new kitchenette, choir loft, and a Hammond organ, totaling $55,000. The church’s influence extended beyond its walls. Rev. Williams’s vision led to the creation of the Green Valley Senior Citizen Apartments between 1969 and 1971. This 100-unit housing complex addressed a crucial need in the community, providing affordable housing for senior citizens and the physically disabled. In 1972, the church expanded again with the construction of an education center costing $450,000. The cornerstone was laid on October 13, 1973, symbolizing the church’s dedication to education. This commitment manifested further in 1974 with the establishment of a scholarship program. Saint Paul Baptist Church has continued to grow and evolve. It has undergone several renovations and expansions, each reflecting the dedication of its members and leaders. The church’s rich history is a testament to its enduring spirit, serving as a beacon of faith and community in Washington D.C.
