A humble one-story frame building. That’s how Gethsemane Baptist Church began. Right here on New Hampshire Avenue between Washington Circle and Eye Street Northwest. This unassuming structure in 1912 held a secret. It held the promise of a vibrant community of faith.
Gethsemane Baptist Church wasn’t just a building. It was a dream. A dream nurtured by Rev James Thomas Harvey. A young Baptist minister who saw the need for a Baptist church in his community. He envisioned a place of prayer and praise. A place where people could come together in faith.
Rev Harvey’s vision wasn’t easy. He faced challenges. A Methodist minister was already using the building. They held a service each. The minister with the more effective service would keep it. Rev Harvey’s sermon was more powerful. His message of “One Lord one faith and one baptism” resonated deeply.
On August 12 1912 Gethsemane Baptist Church was officially born. Nine charter members joined Rev Harvey in that first prayer service. They were Mrs Mary Washington Mr Alexander Johnson Mrs Mary Johnson Mrs Rosa Nelson Mr Ragland Mrs Bowman Mr John Moore Mr Matthews and Mrs Hattie Watkins. These faithful individuals laid the foundation for this incredible church.
The early years were tough. Financially Gethsemane struggled. Rev Harvey worked tirelessly. He was a scaffold builder. He helped build the scaffold for Union Station. His determination in building was matched by his faith.
The church grew. People came from far and wide to hear Rev Harvey preach. Gethsemane flourished. It needed a bigger space. In 1922 Gethsemane moved into a new home. The congregation had grown to several hundred members. The old building was no longer adequate.
The Great Depression hit hard. Gethsemane faced hardship again. Rev Harvey’s health declined. He passed away in 1941. His legacy lived on though. Gethsemane endured. It continued its ministry. The church kept growing.
Over the years Gethsemane Baptist Church saw many changes. It moved locations. It saw different pastors lead the congregation. It expanded its ministry. It established a child care center. This was a groundbreaking achievement. It became the first church based African-American child care center in Washington DC. The church grew steadily in its community.
