Dreaming of Italian summer palaces Duke Karl Eugen built the first Bärenschlössle in 1768. Today we stand before the fourth version of this charming building. Its history is overshadowed by destruction and rebuilding.

The Bärenschlössle is nestled in the woodlands on the shores of the Bärensee lake. It served as a pleasure palace for Carl Eugen. Imagine gondolas once graced the lake. He brought them from Italy.

After Carl Eugen’s death in 1793 the palace fell into disrepair. In 1817 King Wilhelm I ordered its demolition. He replaced it with a hunting lodge. This marked a shift from pleasure to practicality.

The Bärenschlössle faced further trials. It twice burned to the ground. Yet each time it was rebuilt. The current structure largely mirrors the former style. Casement doors replaced the upper-storey windows.

Consider Jürgen Unmüßig. His family now runs the restaurant. His mother began offering simple fare to walkers in 1964. Jürgen himself roamed the deer park as a boy. His grandfather was a forest ranger.

Notice the Bärenschlössle’s surroundings. The area is part of the Wildpark. It is a popular destination for Stuttgart’s inhabitants. The Bärenschlössle got its name from the Bärenbach. Today it is called Bernhardsbach.

Inside the Bärenschlössle you will find a restaurant. The first floor is available for private events. Many celebrate weddings here. In summer the lawn fills with families.

Take a moment to appreciate the resilience of the Bärenschlössle. It has risen from the ashes and remains a beloved landmark. It offers relaxation and delicious food. The Bärenschlössle welcomes visitors year-round. Each season offers its unique charm. From its origins as a duke’s retreat to its current role as a restaurant the Bärenschlössle holds a special place in Stuttgart’s history.
