“Professor Siafakas, what inspired the creation of the European Respiratory Society?” The European Respiratory Society, or ERS, might not be a physical landmark you can touch, but its roots run deep in Prague’s history. Remember the Societas Europaea Physiologiae Clinicae Respoiratoriae, founded right here in 1966? That’s one of the ERS’s proud parents! This organization, along with the Societas Europaean Pneumologica from Italy, merged in London in 1990 to create the ERS we know today. This union of basic scientists and clinicians has been instrumental in the ERS’s success, as evidenced by the growth of its annual congress from 3,000 attendees to nearly 20,000. The ERS, now a global force in respiratory health with over 10,000 members, continues to champion lung health through research, education, and advocacy, just as its founders did here in Prague. They work tirelessly to combat global health threats like smoking and pollution, striving for a future where everyone can breathe a little easier.
