In 1923 a new school opened in Washington DC. It was called Sacred Heart School. Three students attended the school that first year. Six nuns taught them. Mother Clara Meigs Sands was the headmistress. The school was located at 1719 Massachusetts Avenue NW. After World War II the school outgrew its building. The Society of the Sacred Heart bought a 25-acre estate. It was called Stone Ridge. This grand neo-Georgian mansion was built in 1904. The estate belonged to Mr and Mrs George Hamilton. The school moved to the estate in Bethesda Maryland in 1947. The Hamilton mansion became known as Hamilton House. Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart continues to thrive on this campus. It offers classes from preschool to twelfth grade. The school is part of a global network of Sacred Heart schools. Many notable women graduated from Stone Ridge. These include Cokie Roberts Andrea Koppel Maria Shriver and Katie Ledecky. The school’s campus has expanded over the years. It includes a state-of-the-art aquatic center. This center even hosted Olympic swimmers Katie Ledecky and Phoebe Bacon. A new Mater Center was added in 2021. It houses a theater art studios a cafeteria and study spaces. Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart continues its legacy of educating young women. Its commitment to faith academics and service remains strong. This remarkable institution has shaped the lives of thousands of students. The school celebrates a century of excellence in 2023.
