Built in 1898 Quarters F stands proudly. It’s the oldest structure in the Charleston Navy Yard Officers’ Quarters Historic District. Originally a quaint cottage it housed the keeper of Chicora Park. This charming little cottage was far from ordinary. Imagine the keeper tending to the park’s beauty. Then in 1901 the federal government established the Charleston Navy Yard. Chicora Park transformed into an officers’ housing district. Quarters F became the Admiral’s temporary residence.

The Navy purchased Quarters F and its surrounding land. It served as the first home for officers stationed at the Charleston Navy Yard. A significant remodel occurred in 1908. The house was redesigned in a T-shape. A new one-and-a-half story kitchen and dining room were added. Queen Anne features like turrets and a tower were removed. Quarters F’s appearance shifted to a more Colonial Revival style. But technically no single architectural style neatly describes its altered form.

After the Charleston Navy Base closed in 1996 Quarters F became a rental house. Today the City of North Charleston owns it. It’s part of the Charleston Naval Complex Redevelopment Authority. The city has recently restored Quarters F. It will now serve as an event venue. This will complement the Eternal Father of the Sea Chapel. The chapel was renovated and relocated nearby.

Quarters F boasts 6402 square feet spread over two levels. The front elevation faces northeast. The house retains some late Victorian details. These include turned porch pickets and posts. Asymmetrical fenestration is another Victorian feature. The asymmetrical placement is apparent in window groupings. These groupings consist of single double and triple windows.

The house also shows influences of 19th-century Italianate style. Some elements include turned and sawn details on the posts. Small jigsaw C scroll brackets are another example of this earlier style. The house’s evolution through renovations and additions is fascinating. It reflects changing tastes and needs over time. Quarters F stands as a testament to the blend of styles throughout its history. A story told in wood brick and metal. A story whispered through each window and door. A story waiting to unfold for you.
