The Planet\u00e1rio do Carmo is more than just a building. It’s a portal to understanding the universe. The Planet\u00e1rio do Carmo opened its doors on November 30 2005. It became a part of the Open University of the Environment and Culture of Peace UMAPAZ.
Inside the Planet\u00e1rio do Carmo awaits a dome. It stands ten meters high. The dome stretches twenty meters in diameter. Under the dome, two hundred and thirty reclining seats await you.
The magic happens with a Carl Zeiss AG Universarium VIII projector. This advanced projector uses nine thousand optical fibers. It also uses 109 lenses. It creates a stunningly realistic night sky. You will see stars as you have never seen them before.
The Planet\u00e1rio do Carmo isn’t just about shows. It also hosts a classroom with seventy seats. There is also a reading space for those wanting to learn more. The lobby features interesting exhibitions. If you venture onto the terrace you will find two telescopes.
The construction of the Planet\u00e1rio do Carmo cost R$11 million. The projector itself cost R$5 million. This investment shows S\u00e3o Paulo’s commitment to science education.
You can find the Planet\u00e1rio do Carmo at 137 John Speers Street. Many bus routes serve this location. This makes it accessible for everyone. School visits are common during the week. The Planet\u00e1rio do Carmo opens to the public on weekends and some school holidays.
The Planet\u00e1rio do Carmo has faced challenges. It closed in 2007 because of structural problems. Infiltration caused these issues. Fungi even grew on the projector’s lens in 2010. The observation area briefly reopened in 2012. It then closed again in January 2013 due to a water leak.
After repairs costing R$1.2 million the Planet\u00e1rio do Carmo reopened on May 8 2016. It now has revised management. It also hosts a branch of the astrophysics school. The main school is at another planetarium in S\u00e3o Paulo.
The Planet\u00e1rio do Carmo is one of three planetariums in S\u00e3o Paulo. The others include Professor Arist\u00f3teles Orsini Planetarium. There is also the Johannes Kepler Planetarium at Sabina Escola Parque do Conhecimento. Each offers a unique view of the cosmos.
The architects Rita Vaz and Christina Mello created a spiral structure. It resembles a nebula. The copper dome in the center houses the sophisticated equipment. The design balances technical needs with visitor comfort.
