Gazing across the Trier landscape, one can’t help but notice the Kevenicher Berg. This hill, often overlooked, holds a hidden connection to a prominent Trier landmark: the Berghotel Kockelsberg. Let’s journey back to the 8th century, to the very beginnings of the Kockelsberg estate, nestled atop the Kevenicher Berg. The name “Kockelsberg,” as intriguing as it sounds, isn’t unique. It originates from the Latin “cuculus,” meaning mountain peak. The Kevenicher Berg, with the Kockelsberg estate upon it, has witnessed centuries of change. Initially a family-owned manor farm, it became part of the St. James Hospital around the 16th century. For generations, the hospital leased the estate to farming families. In 1742, a chapel dedicated to Saint Francis Xavier was built on the site of the present Berghotel Kockelsberg restaurant. The chapel eventually fell into disrepair. Now, a statue of St. Francis Xavier, funded by donations, graces the gable of the new building, a tribute to the past. A pivotal moment arrived in 1867. Peter Lehnert, an economist, established a restaurant on Kevenicher Berg, transforming the former manor farm into a popular gathering spot. The Kevenicher Berg’s popularity continued to grow, attracting not just locals but prominent figures like Dr. Cristian Stöck and the leather manufacturer Joseph Theodor Eses. Eses envisioned a spa hotel on the Kevenicher Berg and bequeathed a substantial portion of his estate to the Trier Vereinigte Hospitien upon his death in 1887. His will stipulated that a spa hotel be constructed on this spot. This dream was realized with the inauguration of the new Kockelsberg hotel in 1890. The Kevenicher Berg, once a quiet agricultural estate, became home to a bustling hotel, a testament to Eses’ vision. The hotel remained a fixture on the Kevenicher Berg until 1927 when the family relinquished ownership. The road leading up to the spa hotel from Bitburger Chaussee was completed in 1930, opening up the Kevenicher Berg to increased traffic. In 1979, entrepreneur Johann Erdmann purchased the entire property, initiating a transformation that preserved the historical character of the buildings while creating the modern Berghotel Kockelsberg we see today. So, as you look upon the Kevenicher Berg, remember the layers of history woven into its slopes, from ancient manor farms to a thriving spa hotel. The Berghotel Kockelsberg stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of this unassuming hill.
