Standing here at Sankt Botvids begravningsplats, you’re surrounded by more than just graves. This is Huddinge’s largest burial ground. It holds stories of lives lived and memories cherished.
Sankt Botvids begravningsplats was established in 1956. It addressed the shortage of space at Huddinge Church and Tomtberga Church cemeteries. The grounds have expanded since then. In 2002, the burial area nearly doubled.
Sture Frölén designed Sankt Botvids kapell, krematorie- and economic buildings. They opened in 1961. The chapel is a low building with white-plastered brick facades. Three tall bell towers stand before it. They are clad in white Ekeberg marble.
Inside Sankt Botvids kapell, there is a large chapel seating 150. There is also a smaller chapel with 50 seats. The entrance hall connects the two. Limträbalkar support the roof. Kalkstensplattor cover the floor. Large windows offer views of the landscape and Albysjön.
The large chapel at Sankt Botvids begravningsplats serves for funerals and services. Its walls are plastered brick. The ceiling and furnishings are pine. A five-meter-high tapestry hangs above the altar. Harald Lindberg created it in 1967. Katarina Röjgård wove it between 1968 and 1970. Its name is “Ovan jordens flod och dal”.
The small chapel at Sankt Botvids begravningsplats is only for funerals. A silver crucifix stands on the altar. It frames a Jesus image of glazed earthenware. Silver candlesticks stand beside it. Silversmith Bengt Lindblad created these pieces.
Two organs stand in Sankt Botvids kapell. Grönlunds Orgelbyggeri AB built them in 1961. They are mechanical. One is in the large chapel. The other is in the small chapel.
In the summer of 2003, a section for deceased Baháʼís opened. The crematorium underwent renovations in 2011. Ewert Karlsson, a Huddinge figure and cartoonist, is buried at Sankt Botvids begravningsplats. His gravestone bears his EWK signature.
Sankt Botvids begravningsplats includes a Muslim burial ground. There are approximately 980 plots there. A stream flows through the area to a pond.
A new service building called S:t Botvidsgården, opened in 2016. Its predecessor burned down in 2012. One of the memorial groves called Skogsgläntan, lies in the woods near S:t Botvidsgården.
Here at Sankt Botvids begravningsplats, nature and remembrance intertwine. It is a place of peace reflecting the diverse lives of Huddinge’s residents.
