Ever wonder how Weems Creek Baptist Church started? Its story began with a simple desire to create a community. Weems Creek Baptist Church held its first service on February 11 1951. The congregation met in the Garden Farms Community Building.
The church was a mission of College Avenue Baptist Church. Like many missions it lacked its own building initially. In late 1952 the church formed a building committee. They discussed how to house the mission’s ministries.
Weems Creek Baptist Church grew quickly. It formally became Weems Creek Baptist Church in 1953. Thirty-nine charter members dedicated themselves to its mission.
By March 1954 the church purchased property on Ridgely Avenue for $14500. After repairs the first building was dedicated on September 11 of that year. Two years later Roland Smith and his wife Betty became long-time leaders. They served for over 37 years.
Under Pastor Smith’s leadership Weems Creek Baptist Church thrived. The church purchased its current five-acre property. The first service in the new building was held on Mother’s Day in 1960.
The parsonage was completed in 1961. By 1963 the church became fully self-supporting. An addition was completed in 1964 and another in 1974. A steeple was added in 1975. The church maintained its facilities under Pastor Smith’s guidance.
In 1994 David Orr became the pastor. He and his wife Phyllis served as a ministry team. Major building renovations were completed by 1997. These renovations helped the church serve the growing community.
God stirred the hearts of church leaders in 2011. They considered building a new worship facility. Through sacrificial giving a new worship center was completed in 2013. A new children’s wing followed four years later.
