For a while, the land around Upper Hutt City was a mix of farmlands and native forest. The local military responded by building stockades in both Upper and Lower Hutt – they stood there for six months before the threat subsided and they were never put to any serious use.

The train journey from Wellington to Upper Hutt took around an hour in the beginning, but now it’s much faster, thanks to the Rimutaka Tunnel. It takes just 45 minutes to reach Wellington now. This was a key moment for the town’s growth and development. The upper Hutt Valley started to change as people migrated from the city centre, seeking a tranquil lifestyle in the sprawling valley.
