Can you imagine a golf course without a lake? Here at the Chantilly Country Club Dam, that was almost a reality. This dam isn’t just a picturesque backdrop for the 12th hole. It’s the lifeblood of Chantilly National Golf & Country Club. The club, established in 1959, sits on the former Rose Dairy Farm. The land changed hands a few times before becoming the vibrant golf course we see today. The Chantilly Country Club Dam holds back Lake Chantilly, providing essential irrigation for the greens and fairways of this 18-hole course. Designed by local architect Ed Ault, the course features rolling fairways, mature trees, and, of course, strategically placed water hazards, thanks to this very dam. But a few years ago, the Chantilly Country Club Dam faced a crisis. New dam regulations meant either a costly upgrade or complete removal. Imagine the impact on the course if the lake had disappeared. Thankfully, ClubCorp stepped up, investing heavily to bring the dam up to code. They conducted extensive tests, including bathymetric surveys and even a dam breach analysis. The dam was declared safe, posing a low risk to life and property even in the event of a failure. However, the emergency spillway near the 11th and 12th holes revealed another challenge. Erosion threatened to drain the lake, jeopardizing the water supply and marring the beauty of the course. So, over a thousand tons of rip rap were brought in to reinforce the spillway. It was a significant undertaking, but essential to preserving the Chantilly Country Club Dam and the lake it sustains. So, the next time you’re golfing here, take a moment to appreciate the Chantilly Country Club Dam. It’s more than just a dam. It’s a testament to the club’s commitment to preserving its history and ensuring the future of this beautiful course.
