Can you feel that slight breeze? It hints at the hidden world below. We are standing at the Abisso 3° a N di Banne. It is a cave whose unassuming entrance belies its impressive depths.

The Abisso 3° a N di Banne is more than just a hole in the ground. It is a gateway to the subterranean wonders of the Carso Triestino. Its official cadastral number is 1910. The local cadastral number is 4630VG. This abyss features a single entrance.

Imagine the moment of discovery. A faint current of air escaped from the abyss’s mouth. It gave little indication of the vast chambers below. Explorers needed six long days to fully chart its course. They faced considerable challenges navigating its shafts. In particular, they found the 56-meter shaft to be intensely corroded. Precarious blades of rock had to be removed.

The Abisso 3° a N di Banne plunges vertically for 80 meters. Beyond this depth, an extensive gallery unfolds. This gallery is quite different from the upper reaches. It is adorned with striking concretions. After navigating a series of narrow passages the gallery opens into a sizable chamber. A small inaccessible shaft is at the far end. The gallery’s ceiling and walls are completely covered in concretions. The floor consists of mud and pebbles. Another fairly wide branch of the gallery ends after another fissure. This fissure leads into a small room topped by a large chimney.

Several shafts branch off from the longest horizontal section. These are points 8, 13, 14 and 20 on the survey. However, these become impassable after a few meters because of marked constrictions.

The deepest shaft is point 11. It has been explored to a depth of 15 meters. Here, a vertical constriction measuring 15cm x 1m blocks further progress. A natural bridge bisects the opening. It further restricts it into two very narrow apertures. It is estimated that the shaft continues for another 10 meters beyond this point.

The Abisso 3° a N di Banne reaches a total depth of 91 meters. The bottom sits at an elevation of 229 meters above sea level. The cave’s horizontal development stretches for 80 meters. The entrance sits at 320 meters above sea level. Its geographical coordinates are 45.68619 latitude and 13.80664 longitude.

The Carso is riddled with such hidden entrances. Each one whispers tales of geological processes. They also hint at the patient work of explorers who dare to descend. The Abisso 3° a N di Banne is a testament to nature’s artistry. It also shows the enduring human drive to uncover its secrets. So next time you feel a cool breeze on the Carso. Remember the hidden wonders that lie beneath.
