From the ashes of an old farmstead, the palác Svět arose. It stands before you, a testament to dreams and decay. This constructivist marvel, a concrete and steel giant, was the brainchild of Ladislav Svět. He envisioned a social hub, a place where the community of Libeň could gather. The palác Svět was meant to be a symbol of his family’s legacy, built upon the very ground where their farm once stood. It boasted a cinema, shops, a restaurant, a café, and even a gambling hall. Beneath the surface, however, lay a hidden vulnerability. The palace rests on the alluvial sands of the Vltava River. To combat the high water table, its foundations were encased in a lead-lined tub. This ingenious solution would later prove to be its Achilles’ heel. The palác Svět became a beloved local landmark, its cinema, once known as Bio Svět and later as Dukla, held the title of Prague’s largest, boasting 536 seats. The renowned writer Bohumil Hrabal, a Libeň resident, frequented the palace’s Automat Svět, a unique automated restaurant. Hrabal immortalized the Automat and the palác Svět itself in his works, cementing their place in Czech literary history. But the palace’s glory days were numbered. In the 1960s, the protective lead tub cracked, flooding the basement and cinema. The building began a slow decline, exacerbated by the devastating floods of 2002, which left the ground floor submerged. Despite being declared a cultural monument in 2003, the palác Svět continued to deteriorate under the ownership of Antonio Crispino. His neglect and broken promises of restoration have left the palace in a state of disrepair, a poignant symbol of a vibrant past fading into obscurity. Yet, a glimmer of hope remains. Crispino’s daughter is rumored to be willing to sell the property upon inheriting it. Perhaps, one day, the palác Svět will be reborn, reclaiming its place as the heart of Libeň.
