In 1878 the first public initiative to build a church dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus emerged. A generous donation of land near Morro do Chá initiated the project. However the then-bishop Dom Lino Deodato sought a more suitable location. A fundraising campaign among devotees secured land in Campos Elíseos a neighborhood known for its elegant mansions.
On June 24 1881 Dom Lino Deodato laid the cornerstone. A vision soon expanded beyond a simple church. The Liceu Coração de Jesus a Salesian school was founded in 1885. This partnership ensured the church’s long-term survival and offered education to those in need.
The Salesians heavily influenced the church’s design and interior. The neoclassical style reflected European trends. Domingos Delpiano a Salesian artist created the magnificent Carrara marble altar. His artistry extended to the seven-meter-tall gilded copper Christ the Redeemer atop the 62-meter tower.
Completed in 1901 the Paróquia Nossa Senhora Aparecida e Sagrado Coração de Jesus was elevated to the status of a sanctuary in 1914. Its tower was once one of Sao Paulo’s tallest structures. The church played a pivotal role during the 1924 Paulista Revolution. Its strategic location led to it being caught in the crossfire.
