A haven for students. That’s the UTSU Student Commons. Located at 230 College Street it’s more than just a building. It’s a six-storey testament to student life at the University of Toronto. Originally built in 1909 as the Royal College of Dental Surgeons it housed the Faculty of Dentistry until 1959. Then the Department of Architecture took over. It later became the John H Daniels School of Architecture Landscape and Design.
This wasn’t always a student haven though. The building saw many changes. In 2016 the Daniels School moved to a new location. A major renovation followed. Superkul an architectural firm guided the transformation. Significant accessibility upgrades were made. The space was reimagined as a student centre. The UTSU Student Commons officially opened to students in 2022. However even before the grand opening students were welcomed. Space was scarce on campus. So the UTSU opened its doors early providing a much-needed space to study socialize and relax. There were open spaces seating areas and meeting rooms. Wi-Fi was available throughout. Essential staffing was in place.
Imagine the scene. Students filling the rooms. The buzz of conversation the tap-tap-tap of keyboards. The aroma of coffee. A vibrant hub of activity a place for learning collaboration and community. This was the dream. This is the UTSU Student Commons. This student centre isn’t just for studying. It’s meant to be a dynamic place. Clubs will have spaces for meetings. There is a cafe. There will be food financial and wellness services. There are bookable spaces for group activities and events.
Even now the UTSU Student Commons is continually developing. In 2022 renovations and improvements continued. The full experience was expected by September 2022. The UTSU itself will move into offices in the building. The goal is to create a welcoming space. A space where students feel supported. A true home on campus. A place to belong. The UTSU Student Commons is more than just a building. It’s a community a symbol of student life at the heart of the University of Toronto. A place where students can connect relax study and thrive. This is a place where history meets the future. Where the past echoes with the dreams and aspirations of students today.
