Crawford is a cosy suburb. It sits in the Cape Flats area of Cape Town. You will find Crawford nestled between major routes. The M5 highway runs to Cape Town and False Bay. The M7 heads to the northern suburbs. The N2 goes to the airport and Stellenbosch. Crawford is a central location. It is ideal for exploring all of Cape Town’s attractions.
Let’s journey back in time. In 1929, businessman ER Syfret made a generous donation. He provided land. His aim was to create a housing scheme. This was for people evicted from District 6. This act shaped Crawford’s identity. It became a place of refuge.
During the dark years of Apartheid, Crawford became a centre of resistance. A Muslim leader, Hadji Haron, lived here. In 1969, he was detained for his activism. Sadly, he died in jail 37 years later. His sacrifice is remembered. He stands as a symbol of Crawford’s fight for justice. More than thirty thousand people attended Imam Abdullah Haron’s funeral at City Park Stadium in Crawford.
Crawford is home to many schools. The suburb has a strong sense of community. In November 1998, Nelson Mandela visited Crawford’s College Of Cape Town. It was formerly Hewitt’s Teachers’ Training College. This landmark played a significant role in the struggle against Apartheid. Mandela addressed the residents. They were the custodians of Klipfontein Road. This road survived many Apartheid altercations.
Crawford offers more than just history. The Kenilworth Racecourse is nearby. You can spend a day betting on the horses.
Crawford has a population of just under 4,000 people. According to the 2011 census, the suburb is diverse. About 59% of residents are Coloured. Roughly 24% are Indian or Asian. Around 7% identify as Other. White residents make up about 6%. Black African residents account for about 4%.
English is the dominant language. Over 90% of people speak it. Afrikaans is spoken by about 6%.
Crawford is a section of Rondebosch East. It is located about 9.5 km from Cape Town. Pretoria is much further away at approximately 1,306 km.
