Founded in 1974 Tierpark Waidberg is more than just a zoo. It’s a testament to community spirit. Originally established under the leadership of Dr Carlo Oldani the park features indigenous wildlife particularly fallow deer. The park almost faced closure in 1998 due to financial difficulties. Alex Meier the owner of the nearby Restaurant Neue Waid stepped in. He formed the Förderverein Tierpark Waidberg a support group that took over the park’s lease. Thanks to membership fees and generous sponsors the park thrives. It receives no subsidies from any institution. This underscores the power of community engagement.
Every year usually in June or July two or three fawns are born. Their playful antics delight visitors. Beyond the animals Tierpark Waidberg offers breathtaking panoramic views. From its location on Käferberg you can see Zurich the lake and the Alps. This makes it a unique blend of urban accessibility and natural beauty. The annual autumn event draws crowds eager to learn about the park’s inhabitants and its ongoing preservation efforts.
The Tierpark is free and open 24/7. It’s easily accessible by public transport or car. From the Bucheggplatz tram stop take bus 69 to Waidbadstrasse. Or take bus 38 from Höngg. Parking is available at Rehsprung or in the blue zone on Obere Waidstrasse. Alternatively the Restaurant Die Waid right next to the park has its own parking.
