The Politecnico di Torino has a rich history. It officially began in 1906. This happened when the Regia Scuola d’Applicazione per gli Ingegneri merged with the Museo Industriale di Torino. The School for Engineers was established earlier in 1859.
Initially, the Politecnico was located at the Valentino Castle. The university still owns this historic site. In the early 20th century, the Politecnico expanded its focus. It engaged with both European science and local industry. Aeronautics and new labs for chemistry and architecture were established. Later, the Engineering faculty moved to a building between Via Giolitti and Via Accademia Albertina. Sadly this building was destroyed during World War II by Royal Air Force bombing in 1942.
Instead of rebuilding the faculty there, a new location was chosen. The Crocetta district became the site for a larger complex. In 1958, the new buildings on Corso Duca degli Abruzzi opened. This area was previously home to the Stadium built in 1911.
In 1986, the “school for industrial production experts” was created. By 2000, it could award degrees. It was an early example of a European degree program. This program combined engineering studies with language skills and included international internships.
Students at Politecnico also achieved space success. On February 13, 2012, their e-st@r satellite was launched into orbit. This small satellite was built to CubeSat standards. It was carried by the Vega launcher of the European Space Agency.
The Politecnico di Torino is divided into eleven departments. These departments handle teaching and research. They cover areas like architecture and design and automation and computer science. Other departments include electronics and telecommunications and energy. Also environment, land, and infrastructure engineering are covered. Management and production engineering and mechanical and aerospace engineering are important. Further departments are structural, building and geotechnical engineering and applied science and technology. Mathematical sciences and sciences and territorial policies are also included.
The Politecnico has multiple locations. The main site is the Cittadella Politecnica. It stretches from Corso Duca degli Abruzzi. It includes Corso Castelfidardo and Via Boggio. The Business Research Center is located here. It is dedicated to partnerships with companies. The Valentino Castle remains a significant location for architecture and design. The Lingotto site is now home to the School of Master studies. A campus in Mirafiori focuses on automotive engineering and visual communication.
Beyond Turin, the Politecnico has technology centers in Alessandria and Biella. Mondovì and Verrès also host these centers. These locations support research, technology transfer and specialized training.
The Museo Archivio Politecnico preserves the university’s history. It holds records of students and a library focused on engineering and architecture. The museum also promotes science and technology through exhibits and workshops.
The university’s seal has evolved since 1952. It features the Valentino Castle and Minerva the goddess of wisdom. Laurel and oak branches surround these images. The seal also includes the founding year of 1859.
The Politecnico continues to contribute to space exploration. The Alta Scuola Politecnica collaborated with Thales Alenia Space on the LADE project. This project explored lunar architecture. Students visited Thales Alenia Space facilities in Turin. They saw the assembly of lunar modules and the ExoMars clean room.
The Politecnico di Torino remains a leading institution. It shapes the future of engineering architecture and design. Its history is marked by innovation. Its present is focused on global challenges.
