Before the high-rises and bustling roads appeared Wu Kwai Sha was a small village. In 1911 only 135 people lived here. Fifty-nine were men. Life was simpler then. The black sand that gives the area its name came from the iron ore flowing down Ma On Shan. The village’s name even changed reflecting its past.

Originally it was known as Wu Kwai Sha or U Kwai Sha meaning Black Turtle Sands. The current name Wu Kai Sha translates as Black Sand Creek. This area was once home to a large detention center for Vietnamese boat people. Now it’s home to upscale housing estates like Lake Silver and Double Cove. But Wu Kwai Sha Youth Village remains a beloved landmark.

Founded in 1955 the village was initially an orphanage. It housed over 1000 children. It provided a home. A community for kids. In 1971 it transformed. The Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong took over. They turned the former orphanage into a vibrant youth village.

Even without roads in its early days the village thrived. People took kaito boats across Tolo Harbour from Ma Liu Shui. It was challenging but this journey only added to the adventure. Today the Wu Kwai Sha station on the Tuen Ma Line makes it more accessible. There are also many buses.

The village is famous for its extensive facilities. Imagine a place with a chapel a canteen even a basketball court. It has a large soccer pitch. It can accommodate over 1000 campers. It even boasts a rope course.

As you stand here at Wu Kwai Sha Youth Village imagine the transformations it has witnessed. From a small village to a modern hub. From an orphanage to a popular youth center.
