Fifty-five years of stories whisper from these walls. Welcome to Cardinal McKeefry School. This unassuming building on Albemarle Road holds a rich history. It’s more than just a school. It’s a legacy. Cardinal McKeefry School opened in 1970. Named after Cardinal Peter McKeefry it stands proudly. Its roots however reach much further back.

Long before this building stood the first Marist Brothers school in New Zealand. That was way back in 1876. Imagine the boys learning then. Their lessons were in a different building entirely. It was on Boulcott Street. The school moved again in 1911. This time to Hawkestone Street. It was known as Marist Thorndon.

The school educated boys from Year 4 to Year 8. That’s from the ages of nine to twelve. Then came a significant change. The Hawkestone Street location was needed for the Wellington Urban Motorway. The Public Works Act of 1928 dictated this. This spurred the move to the present location.

The opening in 1970 marked a turning point. Cardinal McKeefry himself presided. The school became co-educational. It expanded its age range to include Years 1 to 8. In 1978 it became one of the first integrated schools in the New Zealand state system. This meant it welcomed students of all backgrounds.

Today Cardinal McKeefry School thrives. The students participate in a wide range of activities. There are singing and choral festivals. Arts and technology classes are popular. Cultural activities and regional sporting events abound. Trips to Te Papa Museum and the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary are regularly scheduled.

The school’s motto speaks of its character. It emphasizes love of learning service and growth. The small class sizes foster a close-knit community. The school’s inclusive nature encourages respect for diversity. The after-school care service helps working families. The playing fields and outdoor spaces are a welcome addition. Cardinal McKeefry School isn’t just a place of learning. It’s a vibrant community hub. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of education and community. It’s a place where generations of children have grown and learned. It continues to shape young lives. Its journey is a story well worth remembering.
