On the banks of the Tietê River, a transformation unfolded. Vila Maria, once a quiet landscape of wooden bridges and unpaved roads, grew into a bustling hub. Vila Maria was officially founded in 1917. The Companhia Paulistana de Terrenos spearheaded the development. The district’s name honors the wife of a former landowner. Early Vila Maria residents witnessed a dramatic shift. Crossing the river required boats until 1918, when a wooden bridge was built. Boats remained essential due to frequent floods. Vila Maria’s growth intertwined with the development of Vila Medeiros and Vila Guilherme. Vila Medeiros emerged in 1924 from the Medeiros de Jordão family’s estate. Vila Guilherme arose around the same time, when Guilherme Praun da Silva divided and named streets after family and friends. A wave of Portuguese immigrants shaped Vila Maria between the 1930s and 1970s. Their influence is still evident throughout the subprefecture. Marcolino Augusto Duque, a Portuguese immigrant, arrived in Vila Maria in 1951. He observed firsthand the area’s transformation into a Portuguese enclave. He recalls a time when 70% of the population was Portuguese, compared to less than 20% today. “We used to say the capital of Portugal was Vila Maria,” he jokes. Marcolino’s arrival coincided with the heyday of the Sociedade Paulista do Trote in Vila Guilherme. He became president of this horse-trotting society in the 1990s. He fondly remembers the excitement of the races, often decided by a photo finish. The Trote, a Portuguese tradition, drew crowds of 10,000 in the 1970s. Vila Maria’s story also involves political rivalries between supporters of Jânio Quadros and Adhemar de Barros. This rivalry, according to local resident Virgínia Américo Teixeira, contributed to the district’s progress. Both leaders invested in the area, including the construction of the Vila Maria bridge. Today, Vila Maria is a blend of cultures. It faces challenges like a significant population living in inadequate housing. Yet, it retains a spirit of resilience and hope for the future. Vila Maria is a microcosm of São Paulo and Brazil. It stands as a testament to a dynamic past and an evolving present.
