“A symbol of unwavering loyalty” reads the inscription. This is the Sztandar Szkoły Podchorążych Piechoty NSZ Plaque. It stands as a poignant reminder of a pivotal moment in Polish history.

The plaque commemorates the standard of the Infantry Cadet School a school that played a significant role in shaping the Polish Army. This prestigious institution existed from 1917 to 1939. Its cadets trained rigorously. Their curriculum included military tactics and strategy. This was not simply classroom learning. The school instilled discipline and patriotism.

The school’s origins trace back to 1917. Many soldiers from the Polish Auxiliary Corps refused to swear allegiance to Germany. They were subsequently interned. Those who did swear allegiance formed the Polish Armed Force. The Infantry Cadet School was founded to create a corps of officers. Its first commandant was Captain Marian Kukiel. He was a distinguished officer and a member of the General Staff. The school initially consisted of two platoons with 30 cadets each. Their primary training focused on drill and fencing. Tactical training and modern weaponry knowledge were not emphasized. This was intentional on the part of the German authorities.

The school relocated several times during its early years. It moved from Ostrów Mazowiecka to Zegrze and back. Finally it settled in Ostrów Mazowiecka again. The school expanded. It grew into a battalion with three companies of cadets. One company received training from French instructors. The other two companies were taught by Polish instructors using German army models. The training lasted between five and nine months. It depended on the chosen branch of service.

In November 1918 the cadets played a crucial role. They disarmed German troops in Ostrów Mazowiecka. In Warsaw they participated in negotiations for a peaceful takeover of buildings. On November 20th 1918 the Infantry Cadet School officially assumed control of its new facilities in Warsaw. It became known as the War Infantry Cadet School.

The school had a rich history. It played a vital role in Poland’s fight for independence. It went on to produce a considerable number of officers for the Polish Army. Many of the cadets were involved in the Polish-Soviet War of 1919-1920. Cadets formed the first guard company of Belweder. This took place when Jozef Pilsudski moved in on November 29 1918.

The Sztandar Szkoły Podchorążych Piechoty NSZ Plaque stands here today. It silently tells the story of sacrifice and resilience. This legacy of the Infantry Cadet School is one of courage. It’s a legacy that continues to inspire future generations of Poles. This plaque is a vital part of Warsaw’s historical landscape. Take a moment to reflect on the remarkable history encapsulated within this simple memorial. Remember the school’s brave cadets. Let their dedication serve as an inspiration for all of us.
