Yves Netzhammer. That name echoes through the art world, doesn’t it? Right here in Zurich, tucked away at Binzmühlestrasse 156, is one of his masterpieces: Der Gefangene Floh. Now, this isn’t your typical statue or painting. Der Gefangene Floh is what we call “Art on Buildings”, a large-scale installation within a functioning electricity substation! Imagine: mirrors, drawings, light, and even spoken words woven together to create a captivating labyrinth of perception. The real trick of Der Gefangene Floh? It plays with our sense of reality. The installation is visible through a large window, allowing us a glimpse into this underground world where the lines between the real and the imagined blur. Adding another layer to the experience is the eight-speaker system. It broadcasts metaphorical texts throughout the space, a rhythmic narration that actually controls the play of light within the installation. As the narration ebbs and flows, so too does the illumination, creating an ever-shifting environment that challenges our perceptions of space and time.
