Whispers of history surround Hoshinji Temple. This isn’t just any temple. It’s a living testament to centuries of faith and culture. Hoshinji stands proudly across from the Akamon the Red Gate of the University of Tokyo.

Established in 1596 Hoshinji Temple is a Jodo-shu Pure Land sect temple. Its exact founding date remains shrouded in mystery. The main Amida Buddha a masterpiece attributed to Eshin Souzu arrived in the early 1700s. This statue is a focal point of reverence.

Look closely. To Amida’s right stands Enma the Judge of the Afterlife. A late Edo period carving it’s designated number 10 in the Enma Pilgrimage of Edo. Its artist remains unknown adding to its mystique. The temple’s story extends beyond its impressive statues.

Notice the large stone Koyasu Jizo. This Guardian Bodhisattva of Childbirth and Children is said to have been carved by Kukai in the 9th century. Light a candle here. Feel the connection to centuries of prayers for families and children.

A magnificent bronze Kannon Buddha was commissioned in 1708. See the names? Donors from that era are immortalized on the lotus that supports the Buddha. Their generosity echoes through time.

The Hondo the main worship hall has a story of its own. Damaged by fire in 1839 it was partially rebuilt. Further renovations in 2015 brought it up to current earthquake safety standards. Appreciate the intricate floral ceiling paintings. They depict the Pure Land a breathtaking vision. New kawara tiles top the roof a testament to the temple’s enduring spirit.

Hoshinji Temple is more than just a place of worship. It’s intrinsically linked to the life of Higuchi Ichiyo. This renowned author featured on the 5000 yen bill lived nearby from ages 4 to 9. She cherished memories of her happy childhood. Her novella The Thirteenth Night features falling cherry blossoms. The image evokes the temple’s serene beauty. Her story Child’s Play includes the charming character Shinyo a temple acolyte. Each year on November 23 the anniversary of her death a commemorative event Ichiyo-ki is held here.

In 2015 two bronze statues were added. One depicts Ichiyo as a child known as Natsu. The other a young girl from the Taisho era evokes the elegant atmosphere of the Hongo neighborhood. The statues remind us of the generations who have sought solace and inspiration within these walls.
