“A simple stone yet a life untold” That’s how many would describe this unassuming grave marker. This is the Franz Löh Stone. Here in Melaten Cemetery in Cologne rests Franz Löh. A German sculptor and goldsmith. He was born in Cologne itself on September 11 1874. His life ended much too soon in Düsseldorf on January 30 1918.

Franz Löh wasn’t just any artist. He started his career as a goldsmith. He then honed his skills at the Zeichenakademie in Hanau. Paris became his next canvas. There he transformed himself into a sculptor. This was a self-taught journey. He was significantly influenced by the great Auguste Rodin. His works graced various Parisian salons from 1905 to 1911. He also frequently participated in winter exhibitions at the Cologne Kunstgewerbemuseum.

Imagine the ambition. Franz Löh even proposed a fountain design for the Rosenhof in Cologne’s Volksgarten. This ambitious project was unfortunately rejected in 1913. The reason? The proposed female figure was deemed too nude for public display. Such was the conservative climate of the era. This rejection perhaps shows that even the most talented artists face unforeseen obstacles.

His legacy however lives on. His works found their way into museums across Germany in Cologne Düsseldorf and Freiburg im Breisgau. Even Berlin’s Münzkabinett treasures one of his medals. This is the medal he created in 1916 to commemorate the 50th journey of the Lazarettzug G2 a hospital train. This is a testament to his versatility and talent.

Now look at this modest family gravestone. It bears Franz Löh’s name and dates. It’s a quiet testament to a life filled with artistic passion and ambition. It’s a simple stone. It speaks volumes about a sculptor whose talent touched several cities. Remember Franz Löh. Remember his art. Remember his story. His legacy persists not only in museums but here in this quiet corner of Cologne.
