Imagine finding a statue in a river. That’s how the story of the Santuário Nacional de Nossa Senhora Aparecida begins. This discovery sparked a devotion that continues to draw millions.

Let’s delve into the history of this remarkable Santuário. In 1717 three fishermen were tasked with catching fish. They needed a large amount for a banquet honoring São Paulo Governor Pedro de Almeida. Despite their efforts they caught nothing. They prayed to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. One fisherman cast his net and found a statue of the Virgin Mary. On his next cast he found the head. The fishermen cleaned the statue and wrapped it in cloth. Their luck changed and they caught all the fish they needed.

The statue became known as Our Lady Aparecida. It was first housed in the home of Felipe Pedroso. People came to pray before the statue. Pedroso’s family built a small chapel. A larger chapel replaced it in 1734. The first basilica was built on the site in 1834. Pilgrimage numbers grew. Construction began on the present building in 1955.

The Santuário Nacional de Nossa Senhora Aparecida is the largest Marian shrine in the world. It is the second largest Catholic church by interior area after St Peter’s Basilica. The church can accommodate up to 30000 people inside. The grounds can accommodate many more.

Benedito Calixto Neto designed the new basilica. Construction started in 1955. The structure features Romanesque Revival style architecture. It takes the form of a Greek cross.

Pope John Paul II consecrated the Santuário in 1980. He granted it the title of Minor Basilica. Pope Benedict XVI visited in 2007. He awarded the shrine a Golden Rose. Pope Francis celebrated Mass at the shrine in 2013.

The Santuário has received the Golden Rose three times. Pope Paul VI gave the first in 1967. Pope Benedict XVI blessed the second in 2007. Pope Francis gave the third in 2017.

The image of Our Lady of Aparecida is venerated by Brazilian Catholics. They consider her the principal patroness of Brazil. The Roman Rite feast day is October 12. It is also a public holiday in Brazil.

The Santuário complex includes other sacred areas. There is Cruzeiro Hill. Millions perform the Way to the Cross here. There is Itaguaçu Harbor. The Image of Our Lady was found here in 1717. There is the Mother Church also known as the Old Basilica.

A walkway connects the old church and the new basilica. It is 392 meters long. Many people walk this stretch on their knees as a sign of faith. Cable cars connect the Santuário to Cruzeiro Hill.

The Santuário’s interior is magnificent. The Niche of the Miraculous Image is a highlight. It is exhibited from a 37-meter-high retable. Eucharistic celebrations gather thousands. Outdoor celebrations can host up to 300000 people.

The Santuário Nacional de Nossa Senhora Aparecida stands as a testament to faith. It is a place of pilgrimage and prayer. It is a symbol of hope for millions. Its history and grandeur leave a lasting impression. It welcomes all who seek solace and inspiration.
