Ever wondered how Ulaanbaatar got its current name? You are standing near Akhmadyn khoroolol. The story of this city is a tale of religious centers and political shifts. It is a story that involves a mobile monastery.

Ulaanbaatar, now the capital of Mongolia, has a history that stretches back to 1639. The city wasn’t always fixed in one place. Initially, it was a mobile monastery. This monastery followed the needs of nomadic herders. The herders ensured a constant supply of fresh grass.

In 1639, a palace yurt called an Urguu was built. It served as the center of this moving settlement. The original location was about 230 km from today’s Ulaanbaatar. This was closer to the ancient capital, Karakorum.

Over time, the city moved less frequently as its population grew. It eventually settled permanently. By 1723, Ulaanbaatar became the leading religious and commercial hub. At that time, it was known as Urga. The Gandan Monastery was the heart of Buddhist life. A council of seven lamas made key decisions about religion. Urga was also a vital trade center. Siberian furs and Chinese goods passed through here.

Monks greatly influenced the city’s life. By 1778, about 10,000 monks lived in Urga. They followed strict rules. A decree in 1797 forbade activities like singing and gambling. Executions had to occur outside the city. This kept the Bogd Jebtsundama holy. The residence even had to move. This was to avoid the impure air of markets.

The city had several names. It was first Urguu. This name came from the palace ger. Later, it became Urga in the 18th century. Then, it was called Ikh Khuree. This referred to the Gandan Monastery. In 1924, the atheist Communists changed the name. They wanted a less religious name. They chose Ulaanbaatar, meaning “Red Hero.”

Even with a new name, Ulaanbaatar’s story continued. The city saw hunger strikes in Sukhbaatar Square. These strikes pushed for democracy. Today, Ulaanbaatar stands as a modern city. It still carries the echoes of its nomadic and religious past. The story of Ulaanbaatar is a captivating journey. It goes through centuries of change. It transforms from a mobile monastery to the capital city we know today. Akhmadyn khoroolol stands as a reminder of this rich history.
