We’re standing right here, before its modern facade, but its roots lie in a humble underground space. In the burgeoning Borgo San Sergio district, the need for a spiritual home grew. In 1962, a makeshift sanctuary was opened. Imagine, a church blessed within the walls of a basement provided by the IACP (Istituto Autonomo Case Popolari). This initial space served the community until the present Parrocchia di San Sergio Martire was constructed. The current church, designed by architect Ernesto Natan Rogers, stands as a testament to the community’s growth and devotion. It was consecrated in 1967 by Archbishop Antonio Santin, marking a new chapter for the parish. The Parrocchia di San Sergio Martire officially became a parish in 1959. It drew its members initially from the existing parishes of San Lorenzo di Servola and Santissima Trinità di Cattinara. This transition highlights the ever-evolving nature of communities and their places of worship. Today, the Parrocchia di San Sergio Martire serves over 7,000 parishioners. It’s more than just a building. It’s a vibrant hub. The church hosts regular masses. The adjacent youth center provides a space for connection and activities. The renovations to the churchyard and basement further demonstrate its commitment to community engagement. These improvements allow for gatherings and fellowship after mass.
