Across the street from a bustling ryokan, Wada Elementary School stands as a testament to time. It has lived many lives. Originally known as Tenkawa Nishi Elementary School, it first opened its doors in 1942. Wada Elementary School witnessed generations of students pass through its halls before closing in 2002. Today, we stand before not a relic of the past, but a vibrant community center. The journey of Wada Elementary School is remarkable. Built with the traditional hinoki cypress, a wood usually reserved for temples and shrines, it exudes a sense of reverence. Its L-shaped, one-story structure held classrooms where children once learned. They recited their lessons, practiced their abacus skills, and perhaps even dreamed of futures beyond its walls. When it closed, the school remained in pristine condition. It was occasionally used for town events. This care preserved its unique charm, making it feel more like a museum piece than an abandoned building. There were even times when access was limited to the general public. My friend and I were fortunate enough to experience this firsthand. We initially thought exploring the school would be impossible due to its central location and near-perfect condition. However, a chance encounter and a quick-thinking offer to take professional photos for the ryokan owner, a former student of the school, granted us access. We were amazed by the state of preservation. No spiderwebs, no dust, just a perfectly preserved time capsule. Years later, instead of demolition, Wada Elementary School was reborn. A BBQ area was added, and the building now hosts tours and workshops. You can even swim in the nearby river and roast freshly caught amago. It’s a wonderful blend of preserving history and embracing the future. Wada Elementary School truly embodies the spirit of education and community. It reminds us that even in the face of change, the past can be honored and integrated into a vibrant present.
