The American School Hong Kong ASHK opened its doors in August 2016. It was founded by Esol Education. Esol Education also runs several sister schools around the world. These include schools in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
ASHK provides an American education adapted for Hong Kong. The school serves elementary, middle, and high school students. It goes all the way through Grade 12. A new fifth floor was added when Grade 11 opened in 2021.
From kindergarten to Grade 10, ASHK follows US Common Core standards for Math and English. They also use Next Generation Science Standards. AERO guidelines are used for Social Studies. Grades 11 and 12 offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.
In 2014, the Hong Kong Government held a school allocation exercise. Esol Education won a license for a new international school site. They were assigned the former Buddhist Hui Yuan College in Tai Po.
The original building was seven stories. It measured 5770 square meters. It was initially built in 1992. A new wing was added in 2004. Due to declining enrollment, Buddhist Hui Yuan College closed in 2012. Esol Education renovated the entire building. They updated floors, ceilings, walls, and plumbing. They enhanced learning technology. They also redesigned science areas.
American School Hong Kong is fully accredited for grades KG through 12. This accreditation comes from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges. ASHK is also an IB World School. It is authorized to offer the IB Diploma Programme in Grades 11 and 12.
