Tuen Mun New Town has a rich history. It was originally named Castle Peak New Town. The name changed in 1972 to reflect the historic name of the region. This new town was built on reclaimed land from Castle Peak Bay. Levelled hillside areas were also used starting in the 1960s.

Tuen Mun San Hui a rural market township was incorporated into the New Town’s town centre. Tuen Mun District Office was established in 1974. It was part of the New Territories Administration. The Tuen Mun District Council was established in 1982.
