Brighton Azalea Garden

Amidst the vibrant hues of blooming azaleas, a hidden gem awaits at the Brighton Azalea Garden. Nestled along the tranquil shores of the Triadelphia Reservoir in Brookeville, Maryland, the Brighton Azalea Garden is a breathtaking spectacle of color and tranquility. Established in 1959, this five-acre sanctuary boasts over 22,000 azalea bushes, creating a vibrant tapestry against the backdrop of a hardwood forest. The idea for this floral paradise came from WSSC Water Commissioner Raymond Bellamy, who envisioned a vibrant display of azaleas along the reservoir’s shoreline. WSSC Water Watershed Manager Paul Hancock brought this vision to life, overseeing the planting throughout the late 1950s and 1960s. Originally, azaleas were planted along the shores of both the Triadelphia and Duckett Reservoirs. However, due to vandalism and theft, a dedicated garden was established in 1962 to better protect these beautiful blooms while ensuring public access. Today, the Brighton Azalea Garden stands as a testament to their efforts. As you stroll along the meandering pathways, imagine the thousands of visitors who have been captivated by the garden’s beauty over the years. On a busy Mother’s Day, over 6,000 people have flocked to witness the peak bloom. The garden holds a special place in the hearts of locals and tourists alike, a springtime showplace that draws visitors from across the nation and around the world. From the delicate shell pink of ‘Coral Bells’ to the fiery scarlet of ‘Hinodegiri’, a kaleidoscope of colors awaits. Admire the pure white blossoms of ‘Snow’, the deep crimson hues of Gable’s ‘Herbert’, and the vibrant yellow and orange shades of the Mollis hybrids. The garden also showcases the elegant Kousa dogwood trees, added in the 1990s, and Montgomery County’s champion fringe tree. Take a moment to appreciate the updated gazebo, installed in 2012 by WSSC Water watershed staff. It provides a perfect spot to pause and reflect on the garden’s beauty.
