In 1944, amidst the turmoil of World War II, a seed of hope was planted in Sagamihara. This seed was the idea for Sagamihara Kyodo Hospital. The local residents, facing a critical lack of medical care, rallied together to establish a much-needed healthcare facility. Sagamihara Kyodo Hospital officially opened its doors on August 1, 1945. Initially called the Kanagawa Prefecture Agricultural Association Sagamihara Hospital, its creation marked a turning point for the community. Over the years, Sagamihara Kyodo Hospital has evolved significantly. In 1949, the management shifted to the Kanagawa Prefecture Mutual Aid Agricultural Cooperative Association. The hospital was renamed the Kanagawa Prefecture Mutual Aid Association Hospital. Later, in 1968, it adopted its current name, Sagamihara Kyodo Hospital. The hospital steadily expanded its services. It became a cornerstone of the region’s healthcare system, designated as a regional medical support hospital. Sagamihara Kyodo Hospital is recognized for its comprehensive medical services. It also holds an important role in disaster relief, serving as a designated disaster medical center. In 2006, the hospital’s commitment to cancer care was further solidified with its recognition as a cancer diagnosis collaboration base hospital. Facing increasing patient numbers at its original location near Hashimoto Station, Sagamihara Kyodo Hospital embarked on a major relocation project. The new hospital was built on the site of the former Vocational Ability Development Comprehensive University Sagamihara Campus. This marked a significant upgrade in facilities and capacity. Sagamihara Kyodo Hospital completed its full transition to the new location in January 2021. Interestingly, the old hospital building found a new purpose. Sagamihara City repurposed it as a specialized hospital for patients with moderate COVID-19. This specialized facility operated until 2021. Today, Sagamihara Kyodo Hospital continues to uphold its founding principles of providing compassionate and accessible healthcare to the community. The hospital’s commitment to “one person for the sake of ten thousand, ten thousand for the sake of one” resonates deeply with its staff. They strive to ensure the safety and well-being of each patient.
