What whispers of history does this stone hold? The Grodzisko Bródno Stone stands silently. It bears witness to a forgotten era. We stand now at Grodzisko Bródno. This unassuming place holds the key to Warsaw’s earliest history. The Grodzisko Bródno Stone, in the heart of Bródno Park, marks a settlement that predates the city itself. It was the 10th century. A small, ring-shaped fort stood proudly on this sandy dune. The surrounding marshes of the Skurcza and Ząza rivers provided natural protection for the people within. The Grodzisko Bródno fort wasn’t a grand castle. It served as a refuge, a safe haven for the inhabitants of the nearby settlement. Imagine them rushing through the wooden gate, seeking shelter behind its 6-meter-high walls. These walls were ingeniously constructed. The lower section featured a crisscross pattern of thick wooden beams layered with earth. The upper part consisted of wooden boxes filled with clay and stones. The Grodzisko Bródno’s central area, known as the majdan, remained deliberately unbuilt. It offered a clear space for the community to gather. This open space provided a vital area for refuge within the fort’s protective embrace. The fort at Grodzisko Bródno didn’t last. It burned down in the early 11th century, never to be rebuilt. Yet, life continued in the surrounding settlement until the end of the century. They rebuilt their lives and their homes, though the fort itself fell into ruin. Grodzisko Bródno remained hidden for centuries. Forgotten beneath the soil and trees of Bródno Forest. In the early 20th century, whispers of the past began to surface. Archaeological digs uncovered remnants of homes, workshops, and everyday tools. Even a remarkably preserved 10-spoked wooden wheel was unearthed, a testament to the ingenuity of those early settlers. Now, the Grodzisko Bródno Stone memorializes this forgotten history. The reconstructed walls of the fort offer a glimpse into life in early Warsaw. As you touch the stone, remember the families who sought shelter here. Imagine their fears and hopes. Grodzisko Bródno is more than just stones and earth. It is a story of resilience, community, and the enduring spirit of Warsaw.
