A colossal structure once stood here. This is the site of the former Distrito Anhembi. It was a giant. Imagine its immense halls. They buzzed with activity. For decades this place hosted countless events.

Distrito Anhembi was more than just a convention center. It was a cultural landmark. It held a special place in the heart of São Paulo. Opened in 1970 it quickly became one of Latin America’s largest event venues. The Anhembi Parque as it was once known covered 400000 square meters of indoor space. Another 93000 meters were outdoors.

Think of the São Paulo Carnival. For years it was held at the Anhembi Sambodromo. This was a vibrant spectacle of music dance and celebration. The venue also hosted major international concerts. Aerosmith Britney Spears and Metallica all played here. Its grand halls hosted everything from trade shows to sporting events. Millions of people walked through these doors. They created countless memories.

But the Distrito Anhembi was more than just a venue for entertainment. It was a hub of commerce. Over 20 large annual fairs drew more than 50000 visitors each. The Anhembi also boasted impressive auditoriums. The Auditório Celso Furtado seated over 2500 people. The Auditório Elis Regina held nearly 800. Smaller lecture halls offered more intimate settings.

The Distrito Anhembi’s history is intertwined with the city’s own. It was a place of growth and change. A place of innovation and excitement. It was built by Companhia Brasileira Fichet & Schwartz Hautmont. Raymond Faure engineered it. Architect Jorge Wilheim designed it. It underwent several renovations throughout its life. The last major renovation was in 2012.

Sadly this magnificent structure is no more. It was demolished in 2023. A new and even grander Distrito Anhembi is planned for this site. It will be bigger and better. It will continue the legacy of this important São Paulo landmark. The memories remain however. The spirit of the Anhembi lives on. It is a testament to the dynamism and energy of São Paulo.
