From its humble beginnings as a high school with just two buildings, Sandy Spring Friends School has blossomed into a vibrant preK-12 institution. Sandy Spring Friends School first opened its doors in 1961 with just 77 students in grades 10 and 11. The school’s motto, “Let Your Lives Speak,” reflects its Quaker values. This philosophy emphasizes educating the whole person, allowing their unique strengths to shine through in all aspects of life. Sandy Spring Friends School sits on a sprawling 140-acre campus. Located in the heart of Montgomery County, Maryland, it’s nestled almost exactly between Washington, D.C., and Baltimore.
The school’s history is intertwined with the Sandy Spring Monthly Meeting and Baltimore Yearly Meeting. The idea for Sandy Spring Friends School was first proposed in 1958 by S. Brook Moore. Initial skepticism gave way to generous donations. Esther Scott donated land from her family farm, and Sam Legg, a conscientious objector during World War II who participated in the Minnesota Starvation Experiment, became the first headmaster. The first buildings were Scott House and Moore Hall, a combined dormitory and classroom building. Sandy Spring Friends School expanded rapidly, adding grades and facilities throughout the 1970s and beyond. The middle school was added in 1980 and the lower school in 1993.
Sandy Spring Friends School boasts a rich tapestry of traditions. The Morley Games, invented by teacher Barry Morley, are a quirky set of outdoor games played with everyday objects. These games highlight the school’s resourcefulness and spirit of fun. Community Day brings the entire school together for work projects, games, and an all-school aerial photo. Our People, Our Planet Day focuses on environmental literacy and understanding the school’s diverse community. Intersession, held before spring break, requires Upper School students to participate in experiential learning trips around the world.
