Gazing at Gymea, can you envision a six-meter tall flower? This is the land of the Gymea Lily, a vibrant red bloom that once painted this landscape. Gymea itself borrows its name from this magnificent flower, originally called “kai’mia” by the Dharawal people. In 1855, surveyor W.A.B. Geaves, inspired by the local name, officially christened the area Gymea. The Gymea Lily isn’t just a name. It has become a symbol, proudly displayed on the crests of local organizations. While development has sadly diminished their numbers, you can still find these striking lilies thriving a short distance south, within the Royal National Park. Gymea’s story isn’t solely floral. It’s a story woven with the tracks of steam trams, which chugged between Cronulla and Sutherland, passing through Gymea in the 1920s. Later, in 1939, Gymea’s railway station opened, connecting this once-quiet suburb to the bustling heart of Sydney. Today, Gymea offers a blend of old and new. The Gymea Shopping Village, conveniently located near the railway station, bustles with cafes, restaurants, and boutiques. A symbol of Gymea’s past, the Gymea Hotel, originally the Gymea Rex Hotel, stands proudly on Gymea Bay Road, a reminder of the suburb’s growth since its opening in 1959. Gymea is also a hub for arts and culture. The Hazelhurst Regional Gallery and Arts Centre hosts exhibitions, studios, and a tranquil garden, offering a space for creativity and community. From its vibrant commercial center to its natural heritage, Gymea offers a captivating blend of history and modern life.
