From a bird’s-eye view, imagine a human heart. Nakano Ward Reiwa Elementary School, nestled in the heart of Tokyo, is like that human heart, beating with life and history. Nakano Ward Reiwa Elementary wasn’t always here, in this vibrant neighborhood. It was born from the union of two schools, Kamitakada Elementary and Shin’i Elementary. This merger, in April 2020, created a new pulse in the community. The name “Reiwa,” meaning “beautiful harmony,” reflects the hope for a blend of cultures and traditions within these walls. The original Shin’i Elementary opened in 1938. Eighty years later, in 2018, the school celebrated its anniversary. A memorable aerial photograph was taken, capturing the entire student body forming the shape of their beloved mascot character. Shin’i Elementary had a unique tradition. Students from different grades engaged in activities together, fostering connections that extended beyond the classroom. This created a rich tapestry of friendships and a strong sense of community. The new building, occupied in April 2022, stands on the site of the former Shin’i Elementary. The school’s mascot and the cross-grade interactions, a legacy from Shin’i, continue to thrive. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of this place. While the loss of the historic Shin’i building is bittersweet, Nakano Ward Reiwa Elementary School carries its heart within its own.
