Assembléia de Deus – Ministério Ipiranga

Could a simple act of faith heal a 70-year-old woman? At the Assembléia de Deus – Ministério Ipiranga, such miracles seem woven into the very fabric of its history. The Assembléia de Deus – Ministério Ipiranga stands as a testament to unwavering faith, a beacon in São Paulo’s Ipiranga district. Its story begins not within grand halls, but amidst the tranquil greenery of Ipiranga Park. In 1931, Missionary Samuel Nystrom, recognizing the need for spiritual growth in São Paulo, dispatched Evangelist Vitaliano Piro to the Ipiranga district. Piro began holding services in the park, a humble start that would soon blossom into a thriving ministry. The early days of the Assembléia de Deus – Ministério Ipiranga were marked by both spiritual triumph and opposition. Five souls found Christ in the first park service. However, religious figures from a local educational institution hurled stones and insults at Piro, attempting to disrupt his work. Undeterred, Piro continued, his faith unshaken. A turning point came when Piro, accompanied by a small group of followers, sought refuge from these attacks in the home of Josefina Fernandes. Her modest dwelling, with just a kitchen and small bedroom, became the first sanctuary of the Assembléia de Deus – Ministério Ipiranga. On June 29, 1931, a cold and gray Monday, the first baptisms took place in the Ipiranga stream, just three kilometers from the current church location. Among those baptized was 70-year-old Carmem Ruiz Triston, who suffered from severe asthmatic bronchitis. Her son, Francisco, feared for her health and threatened Piro if anything happened to her during the baptism. However, Carmem emerged from the water completely healed, a testament to the power of faith. This miraculous event solidified the Assembléia de Deus – Ministério Ipiranga’s presence in the community. The church continued to grow, moving from Fernandes’ home to larger spaces as more people joined the congregation. The church’s first building, on Rua Caldeira, was inaugurated in 1934. It even housed one of the first Assembly of God orchestras in São Paulo. Pastor Alfredo Reikdal took leadership in 1943. Despite the economic hardships of World War II, Reikdal tirelessly trained preachers and established new congregations. His vision led to the construction of the magnificent Gothic-style cathedral that stands today on Avenida Dr. Ricardo Jafet, a landmark known as the “National Cathedral of Independence”. The Assembléia de Deus – Ministério Ipiranga, from its humble beginnings in Ipiranga Park to its grand cathedral, stands as a symbol of resilience, faith, and the power of community. It serves as a reminder that even amidst adversity, faith can flourish and miracles can happen.
