From its unassuming location in Higashi-Ooi, Tokyo Shinagawa Hospital has witnessed a remarkable evolution. Today, we stand before a modern medical facility. Let’s delve into its captivating past. Tokyo Shinagawa Hospital’s story began in 1923. It started as a psychiatric institution called “Semusu Soba Byoin” in Minami-Shinagawa. The hospital’s unique design, featuring private rooms and an emphasis on patient autonomy, set it apart. It provided a sanctuary for those seeking mental health care. During World War II, the hospital underwent a transformation. It was renovated and reopened as “Tosho Ooi Byoin”, a company hospital for Tosho Denki (now Toshiba Corporation). It served both company employees and the local community. A pivotal moment occurred in 1964 when the hospital relocated to Higashi-Ooi and became “Tosho Chuo Byoin”. This move marked its growth and expansion. Several decades later, in 1993, the hospital moved to a new building and was renamed “Tosho Byoin”. It adopted modern medical equipment and an integrated medical information system. This enhanced efficiency and transformed it into a contemporary medical institution. This modernization continued with the establishment of a rehabilitation department in 1994. A research laboratory was also established, focusing on hepatitis virus research. This fostered collaboration between clinical practice and scientific inquiry. In 2018, another significant shift occurred. The hospital transitioned to a new legal entity under the “Midorino Kai” medical corporation and was renamed “Tokyo Shinagawa Hospital”. It expanded its services to include breast, spinal, neurosurgical, and obstetrics and gynecology departments. It underwent extensive renovations and established a High Care Unit (HCU). It further strengthened its commitment to comprehensive care by establishing a new rehabilitation ward in 2018. In 2019, a catheterization laboratory was added and outpatient obstetrics and gynecology services were reinstated. Telemedicine consultation services were launched, expanding access to care. The hospital also upgraded its CT scanner, ensuring advanced diagnostic capabilities. Tokyo Shinagawa Hospital continues to evolve. In 2020, it opened specialized wards for infectious diseases, including COVID-19, and obtained accreditation for human dock examinations. A PCR testing machine was installed, further enhancing its response to infectious diseases. In 2021, the hospital increased its bed capacity to 329 and acquired an angiography system. This investment allowed for detailed examination and treatment of blood vessels. Tokyo Shinagawa Hospital offers a wide range of medical services. It has internal medicine, surgery, and various specialized departments including neurosurgery, respiratory medicine, and pediatrics. The hospital has a dedicated rehabilitation department and conducts clinical trials. Tokyo Shinagawa Hospital actively engages in community healthcare. It offers health checkups, cancer screenings, and vaccinations. It also provides home medical care, rehabilitation guidance, and visiting nursing care. This makes it an integral part of the local healthcare landscape.
