“Diverse in Culture, United by Faith.” That’s the motto of First African Methodist Episcopal Church of Gaithersburg. I want to share its story with you.

First African Methodist Episcopal Church of Gaithersburg began its journey on April 27th 1984. Bishop John Hurst Adams appointed Reverend Dr. Lois Ann Poag Ray to the Rockville and Gaithersburg areas. She provided competent leadership from 1984 to 1993. This period marked the birth of a miracle for the church.

The first fellowship meeting occurred at the Gaithersburg Community Center on June 8 1984. James Walker and Lorine Walker were present. The first worship service was held at Gaithersburg High School on July 1. The location was chosen because of its convenience to Route 355.

Rev. Poag Ray’s first sermon was entitled “Cast Out Your Net”. It was based on John 21 verses 1-11. The message addressed the challenge before the small group of believers. The first three years presented struggles growth and challenges. But the believers witnessed God’s authority provisions assurance and control.

During the fourth year a down payment was made on 2 1/2 acres of land. A secured loan was obtained for the property and construction of a worship facility. Work began in June 1988. Eight months later First African Methodist Episcopal Church of Gaithersburg became a reality. Today it is fondly called the “Miracle in Gaithersburg”.

From 1993 to 1996 Reverend Dr. Eddie Lewis William became the first full-time pastor. He established a Prayer Ministry Career Ministry Tape Ministry and a Young People’s Bible Ministry. Rev. Williams emphasized the five pillars. These were worship ministry discipleship evangelism and fellowship. They were included in all activities for Kingdom Building.

In 1996 Reverend Charles Smith was appointed. He implemented Lenten Season Services to unite believers. These services fostered worship and fellowship. They included other A.M.E. Churches and United Methodist Churches. Rev. Smith’s theme was “Striving for Unity of the Spirit”. The church continued growing as “The Miracle Church in Gaithersburg”. In April 2002 an additional half acre of land was acquired.

From 2002 to 2019 Reverend Dr. Barbara Y. Glenn led the church. With her late husband as Assistant Pastor they brought blessings and an invigorating spirit. Great emphasis was placed on worship Bible Study and Christian Education.

Membership grew rapidly. An additional 8:00 a.m. worship service was added. Children’s church was established. Ministries for men and women were created. The Women’s Ministry supported women in their roles. It offered spiritual and relational growth opportunities. The Men’s Ministry encouraged male presence and participation.

A Health Ministry was created. It focused on healthy lifestyles. The church newsletter was reestablished as “Kingdom News”. A website was created. A new ministry known as C.R.R.O.S.S. was born. It stands for Community Resources Referral and Outreach Support Services. More surrounding land was obtained. The land from the parking lot to the fence line is now debt-free.

In 2019 Reverend Dr. Vanetta Brice was assigned. She brought a fresh approach to ministry. A fervent prayer warrior and Bible Study teacher she encourages seeking God in prayer and scripture. Rev. Brice aims to develop a strong ministry for youth and young adults. She serves as the treasurer for the Second Episcopal District and the Washington Conference.
