Colonel Antoni Władysław Żurowski a name whispered with reverence on Prague. Here before us stands a simple stone monument. It honors a remarkable man. A man whose life reflects the tumultuous history of Poland. This monument a somber tribute to his service and sacrifice. It stands in the center of a small square. The square itself bears his name.

Colonel Żurowski’s life was a tapestry woven with threads of war and peace. Born in 1898 or 1903 sources differ he joined the Polish Military Organisation in Smolensk. He fought in the Polish-Ukrainian and Polish-Soviet Wars. He rose through the ranks. He even commanded a Border Protection Corps Battalion. He bravely defended his post against the Soviet invasion in 1939.

During the Second World War Colonel Żurowski remained steadfast. He refused to surrender. He made his way to Warsaw. He joined the fight. He became a key figure in the Home Army. He was responsible for organizing the crucial airdrops from the West. A daring and essential operation. It kept the resistance fighters supplied.

In 1944 he commanded the VI Praga District. He led the uprising on Prague. He faced a formidable foe. His forces were severely outnumbered and outgunned. They had only 300 long guns and 13 machine guns. Despite their disadvantage they fought fiercely. They attacked police stations and schools. They even managed to strike at German barracks. The fighting was intense. Roughly 500 insurgents died. It was a brutal conflict. It was unlike the battles fought on the left bank of the Vistula. He was facing elite front line troops.

After five days of fighting Colonel Żurowski made a difficult decision. He ordered a ceasefire. He prioritized saving civilian lives. The Germans surprisingly did not retaliate. It remains a mystery. There are rumors of secret negotiations. A priest from the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary may have played a role.

Following the uprising Colonel Żurowski met with General Kieniewicz. He urged his soldiers to join the regular army. But the subsequent arrests of his former fighters forced him into hiding once more. This bold soldier would spend eleven years living under assumed names. He was eventually rehabilitated in 1958.

In his later years Colonel Żurowski dedicated himself to preserving the memory of the Home Army. He gave lectures. He wrote memoirs. He served as chairman of the Home Army VI Praga Area Community. He remained a strong figure. He remained a respected leader. Colonel Żurowski’s legacy continues to inspire. He is remembered for his courage and unwavering devotion to his country. His story a testament to human resilience. A poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the Warsaw Uprising.
