Founded by Dante Ferrando a former Gray Matter drummer along with a group of investors including the iconic Dave Grohl this club quickly became a haven for alternative punk metal and electronic music.
Imagine a time before the Black Cat. Before its legendary Mainstage could hold 800 screaming fans before the Backstage and Red Room buzzed with lesser-known acts. This building was once a dance club called The Cage. Even earlier it housed Mattos Paints. This building has stories.
The Black Cat’s influence extends beyond its walls. It has hosted countless acts some rising stars others already established. Jeff Buckley Bikini Kill Death Cab for Cutie The Cramps The Killers The Strokes Elliott Smith and many more have graced this stage. They’ve all contributed to the Black Cat’s vibrant and unique atmosphere.
The Black Cat’s not just about music. The first floor once housed Food For Thought a café serving vegetarian meat and vegan dishes. This was named after a Dupont Circle restaurant owned by Ferrando’s father. It’s a detail that shows the club’s connection to the neighborhood’s rich history.
Sadly in 2018 changes came. The Backstage and Red Room closed. The venue shrank. This was due to changing neighborhood dynamics and a shift in patron preferences. Yet the Black Cat remains a powerful symbol. A testament to the enduring spirit of independent music in Washington DC.
