Who remembers those pixelated aliens from the arcade game Space Invaders? You know, the ones from the 1970s? Well, right here in Vienna, those digital invaders have, quite literally, landed. We’re standing before a Space Invader mural, one of 56 scattered across the city. Created between 2006 and 2008 by a French artist known only as Invader, these tiled mosaics aren’t just street art; they’re a love letter to a video game that took the world by storm. Each Invader is a unique creation, crafted from small, colorful tiles that perfectly mimic the 8-bit graphics of the original game. Interestingly, Invader considers his work a blend of game, contemporary art, graffiti, and street art, all rolled into one. He aims to liberate art from stuffy museums and bring it to the streets, freeing those pixelated aliens from the confines of video game screens. Each mural is meticulously placed, often in unexpected locations, inviting you to discover them as you explore the city.
