In 1943, amidst the global turmoil of World War II, JTEKT’s Tokyo Plant began its operations. This wasn’t the first incarnation of JTEKT, of course. The company, known then as Koyo Seiko Co., had been founded in 1921. JTEKT’s Tokyo Plant became a vital cog in the company’s expanding industrial machine. The original Tokyo Plant eventually merged with the Hamura Plant in 1979. The resulting facility, also called the Tokyo Plant, stands as a testament to JTEKT’s adaptability and resilience. Interestingly, JTEKT wasn’t always the name you see today. It emerged from a merger between Koyo Seiko Co., Ltd. and Toyoda Machine Works, Ltd. in 2006. This union brought together a rich history of innovation, including the world’s first electronically controlled power steering system, developed by Koyo Seiko in 1983. Just think, the technology that makes our modern cars so easy to handle has roots right here in the lineage of JTEKT. The company’s commitment to advancements didn’t stop there. In 1988, Koyo Seiko achieved another milestone. They began production of the world’s first electric power steering system, paving the way for more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly vehicles. Today, JTEKT continues to be a major player in the automotive industry. They produce a wide range of components. Their products range from bearings to driveline components to those cutting-edge steering systems. JTEKT’s story is a compelling blend of historical significance and ongoing innovation. It’s a reminder that even in times of conflict and change, progress and ingenuity can flourish.
